Haggerston Castle's History

Haggerston Castle was first mentioned in sources in 1311, when Edward II visited the castle, and again in 1345, when it was described as a 'strong tower' and was granted a licence to crenellate by Edward III in the same year.

It is known that John de Hagardeston inhabited the castle in the late 12th and early 13th century, his death having been documented circa 1210. The name of de Hagardeston appears to have changed to the anglicized spelling of Haggerston with Thomas Haggerston, born circa 1458.

In 1642, Sir Thomas Haggerston was created the first baronet of Haggerston, in the Baronetage of England.

There was a Royalist Garrison here in 1648 which was threatening Holy Island. By the 1770s it had been remodelled as a four story block with sash windows. There were further additions in 1813. The Leland family purchased it by 1860 and more work done after a fire in 1898. The Castle was abandoned c1930 and by 1974 had been demolished except for the Tower, Norman Shaw's water tower of 1893.

Haven Holidays now owns these buildings and operates a holiday park on surrounding 256 acres of land. Why not try private caravan hire and enjoy your own Haggerston Castle holidays.
